Palestinians are expected to hold a general strike and observe a day of mourning following the death of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail due to lack of medical attention. People across the Palestinian territories will join the strike on Wednesday, a day after the death of Maisarah Abu Hamdiah, a 64-year-old prisoner, who had been suffering from throat cancer.

Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has blamed the Israeli regime for refusing to grant Abu Hamdiah an early release.

Abbas said the death of Hamdiah showed the Tel Aviv regime’s “arrogance and intransigence over the prisoners.”

Abbas also stated that the Palestinian Authority had worked to get the prisoner released for treatment but the Israeli regime “refused to let him out, which led to his death.”

Nabil Abu Rudeina, Abbas’s spokesman, also said the regime of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was responsible for the death of the Palestinian prisoner.

Meanwhile, Salam Fayyad, the acting premier of the Palestinian Authority, also condemned Tel Aviv and called for an international inquiry into Hamdiah’s death.

On Tuesday, Palestinian prisoners in several Israeli jails protested the death of Abu Hamdiah.

People also demonstrated across the occupied West Bank. In the city of al-Khalil (Hebron), Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and rubber bullets at nearly 300 angry demonstrators. Three people were reportedly injured in another demonstration held in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Iran Stands With Palestine!

iran-palestineIran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has described supporting the rights of the Palestinian people as the unwavering strategy of the Islamic Republic.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran completely supports the rights of the Palestinian nation in all international circles,” Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday in Egypt’s capital, Cairo.

“Israel is in a position of weakness and if the resistance of nations and Palestinian groups continues, undoubtedly the future outlook of nations will be brighter,” Ahmadinejad added.

The Iranian chief executive described the recognition of a Palestinian state by the UN as a step forward, which has created a better opportunity to pursue the rights of the Palestinian nation more seriously.

On November 29, 2012, the UN General Assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state.

Abbas, for his part, expressed gratitude for Iran’s support and said Iranians have always stood beside the Palestinian nation.

The Iranian president arrived in Cairo on Tuesday to attend the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and was welcomed by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

The OIC, which was established in 1969, is the second-largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations and has 57 member states spread over four continents.

With Israel’s election only weeks away, a rather remarkable online initiative has begun: Israelis are offering to give their votes to Palestinians occupied by Israel in the West Bank.

The idea behind this initiative is simple: Palestinians subjected to a military system of justice in the Occupied Territories, and wholly under Israel’s control, have no democratic say in the process that binds them. And so Israelis, to protest the occupation and this undemocratic dynamic, are offering to give their vote to a Palestinian and cast a ballot as their matched counterpart in the West Bank desires.

The Facebook site housing this initiative, Real Democracy, already has countless offers from Israelis willing to give up their votes as well as matches with Palestinians, such as the following:

This initiative, while modest, is more than symbolic, as real votes will be cast in Israel’s elections on January 22 as a result.

Will it skew the election’s results? No, it won’t. But this protest is striking a chord and experientially demonstrating how Israel’s occupation and military dominance of the West Bank isn’t just inhumane, but undemocratic as well.

Israel has a choice: give up the occupation and salvage those few remnants of a two-state solution which still exist or give Palestinians a vote in a bi-national, single state. For the status quo, in which Palestinians are controlled without any political rights, cannot continue.
